December is a busy month in the Brucia household. Add two birthdays on top of Christmas, and you blink and it's over. Travel from Seattle to Boston with a toddler, and Thanksgiving really seems like six months ago. That said, Chris, Kate and I had a wonderful time in Cape Cod visiting with everyone, including Alice and George, who came up for a few days.
During the visit, I took a look at my 33-year-old baby book and am apologizing to Kate now for not keeping as detailed records as her Grandma did for Michael and me. In that spirit, some Kate observations in the last month or so:
- You had your 18 month check up just before Christmas. You were in the 50th percentile for your age for both weight and height. You are about 31 inches tall and 24.5 pounds. Strangely, this was probably your worst doctor's visit yet. You cried as soon as I set you down to stand on the scale - you've been in a bit of a "mommy" stage lately and were nervous about the doctor's office/new experiences. Thankfully, there were no shots scheduled, so things did improve as you warmed up to Dr. Chao over the course of the visit.
- Just today, you discovered how to walk on your tippy toes and were practicing barefoot on the tile floor in the kitchen. Dad and I think it's hysterical. You hold your arms out like Frakenstein for extra balance.
- You can count...and you love it. At breakfast with Grandma Mary over Christmas vacation you said the next number after me. I said one, you said "twoooooo." I said five, you said "six." You know your numbers up to 10, but you don't always cooperate about counting. Daddy tried to get you to show off your skills when Grandma Alice and George arrived, but you wouldn't perform:).
- My favorite moment of Christmas vacation was when we were all at the mall with Mike, Caitlin, Brendan, Nathan and Grandma Mary and Grandpa Gerry. Dad was holding Brendan's hand, and even though you previously only wanted Mommy, suddenly Daddy was attractive. Jealousy struck, and you needed to hold his hand. And then you became best friends with Brendan. Soon, all three kids were holding hands at the mall. Nathan was the last to join in, but when he saw you holding Brendan's hand, he came over to you and said, "hand." Daddy got a picture on his phone, but we were all sorry that we didn't have a real camera.
- As a gift to Grandma Mary and Grandpa Gerry, we all arranged for the grandkids to have their pictures taken by a professional photographer that did Mike and Caitlin's wedding and has photographed the boys. Well, you cried...a lot. Even after Mommy was asked to leave the room, you weren't having it. You will likely be photoshopped in because the photographer couldn't get a single shot with all three of you. We'll see if he's a miracle worker and all of that.
- You still won't eat meat. And you wouldn't even eat mashed pototoes that Grandma Mary made...and hers are good. However, we were finally impressed that - of your own will - you tasted a few french fries from Daddy's lunch at Mashpee Commons. Normally, parents wouldn't encourage this, but since you say "no" to so many things without even trying them, this felt like success:).
- When we were in Cape Cod, you developed a pretty quick crush on Grandpa Gerry. You were calling "grandpa" from the tub, and it became a game that he had to keep coming back to the bathroom when you called him. And when mom asked you to hand him his Christmas present, you happily walked to the kitchen to give it to him.
- Because of all of the cute moments above, we might forgive you for not sleeping at all in your carseat on the cross country flights. Well, maybe. Mom and Dad look forward to when you can really watch a movie. Until then, entertaining you on a plane is tough work!
Brendan, Kate and Nathan at the Cape Cod Mall. We weren't really shopping - just some place inside for the kids to get out. Kate liked the pet store.
Christmas 2010
P.S. Of all Kate's gifts, it's pretty clear she likes markers best.
