Kate is 12 weeks old today, and we're happy to report that she's doing very well. New in the last few days, she's getting much better at holding her head up. When you're walking around with her, she's holding her head up off your shoulder, and she's very busy looking around. Last night, I put her in her crib swaddled when she was still awake. It took about 15 minutes, but she went to sleep by herself with little noise. That was a big victory. Also, she's finally found interest in the pacifier...not all the time, but she finally knows what to do with it. This has helped to settle her down when she's tired. And the best part of everyday is the smiles...we love them!
I have two more weeks before I go back to work. This week will be all about play...Mary and Gerry arrive on Tuesday. I think we'll get to a farmer's market, a brewery lunch and probably lots of walks. And Grandma and Grandpa are on tap to babysit while Chris and I go to a game night with friends and a Yankee game next weekend. Good times!
Time to end this post. Kate is right on schedule...waking up and time to eat again!

Kate did wonderful at Chris' office...very alert and happy. And fell asleep for a few moments when Chris and I were eating lunch and chatting with a few of his friends who stopped by. But, the afternoon was still eventful...sadly, an emergency bath was needed and another onesie bit the dust after I took the scissors to it ER style. I finish these episodes mentally exhausted, and I'm not overstating things to say that Kate seems very pleased with herself when it's all done.
We ended the afternoon on a more pleasant note...trip to Safeway via stroller. I'm impressing myself with all that I can carry home, especially if I load the bottom of the stroller with the heavy stuff. And then the hills become a nice workout, too.
10:18 p.m. I will regret staying up this late tomorrow at 5 a.m.

I love it when I can notice that Kate is showing signs of getting sleepy, and I can "catch" the yawn or arm chewing before she gets overtired/overstimulated. I walked her around for a few minutes and put her in a crib still awake but starting to zone out. Put the swaddle on and rubbed her tummy for just a few minutes more. I walked away, and when I looked back in not three minutes later, she was asleep. I've only been able to accomplish this a few times so far as far as her being able to put herself to sleep after being swaddled, but when it works, it's so nice for the both of us! The goal is that she'll be able to put herself to sleep consistently within the next couple of weeks...we'll see.
Fun afternoon ahead...bringing Kate to Amazon to meet Chris' co-workers and have lunch with Dad. (I hope she does the explosive poop of the day BEFORE it's time to go the office. I don't want to be using the surgery scissors in an Amazon bathroom (for those of you who don't know, sometimes Kate's once-a-day poops are so explosive that no diaper can hold them in and depending on the clothes damage, sometimes I just have to cut them off). Sorry I just typed all that...it is gross!

There are few blog posts lately because I can't dictate them while nursing Kate. If I could write them without needing any of my hands, I'd be chronicling a lot more because this is such as special time that is going quickly. It's amazing to see how she changes from week to week. Some highlights since our last post:
Some new video:

Somehow we're on the cusp of the two-month mark, which is officially on Sunday. We'll be celebrating by taking Kate to her first baseball game, Yanks v. Mariners. Should be a good one and a bright, sunny day at the ballpark.
We've had a busy few weeks and are looking at a great weekend ahead. Last week we traveled to Cannon Beach in Oregon for 3 nights and then spent a night in Portland on the way back. The weather was iffy, but after all the ridiculous heat this summer no one complained. We were able to walk Kate on the beach a few times (she slept in the ergo) and we enjoyed just getting out of town. Portland was a highlight for me since I had not been there in the 4 years we've lived in Seattle. It was nice, but I agree that it's very similar to Seattle. Still, we ate like kings at the Bite of Oregon festival and still found room for some Voodoo Donuts after stopping at the jaw-droppingly awesome Powell's Books in the Pearl District.
The Grandparents Brucia arrived here last night and are helping Stacey with Kate today while I work. Tonight, we're getting a nice adult dinner at a fancy steak place while they babysit. Sometime today, Uncle Bob is also coming up from LA. He'll come with my Dad and me to tomorrow night's Yankees--Mariners game and then the Brucias head back to NJ Sunday.
As always, more pictures than you wanted of Kate are available here.

Today Kate is already five weeks old. That's pretty amazing. She's hitting her fifth week right at the start of a horrible sounding heat wave kicks in. Today will be 87, followed by 90 on Monday, 93 on Tuesday, 95 Wednesday, 95 Thursday, and 88 Friday. Ouch.
We're actually headed to a hotel Tuesday-Thursday to keep Kate out of the excessive heat (no A/C in our building). So we just need to survive Monday night and Thursday night and we should make it to the weekend, when temperatures are supposed to dip back into the manageable low-80s, relatively unscathed.
Yesterday we received a nice Pack and Play as a gift. It comes just in the nick of time for not only our hotel stay this week but our planned trip to Cannon Beach, Oregon in a few weeks. We're excited to get out of town for a few days and see how Kate does on the road.
